Our Training Courses
Our Children’s Grief training has been designed to give professionals an understanding of the impact a bereavement can have on children and young people. Individual modules make up the Children’s Grief programme and aim to provide an understanding of the factors that contribute to the child or young person’s reactions following a bereavement, with ideas of how to support them and their family. The following modules are currently being offered:
Introduction to Children’s Grief
Monday 2 December 2024, 9.30am - 12.30pm - Virtual
Learning outcomes:
- The confidence to communicate with bereaved children, young people and their parent/carer.
- An understanding of grief reactions and the different models of the grieving process.
- Knowledge of the different responses to a bereavement at different developmental stages.
- Suggestions of how professionals can help bereaved children and young people.
- An awareness of the impact on a family following a bereavement and the ways that professionals can support parents.
Supporting Children with Anticipatory Grief
Friday 5 December 2024, 9.30am - 2.30pm - Virtual
Learning outcomes:
- To have an awareness of the impact on a child or young person when a family member is diagnosed with a terminal illness.
- To be aware of the ways that professionals can support the child or young person and their family.
- To have an insight into our support for children and young people pre-bereavement.
Using Creative Activities and Literature to Support Bereaved Children
Monday 13 January 2025, 9.30am - 12.00pm OR 1.00pm - 3.30pm - at Hopehill Scout Campsite, Meaopham
Learning outcomes:
- An understanding of why creative activities are useful when working with bereaved children, with the opportunity to have a go at some ‘hands on’ activities.
- An introduction to using literature with bereaved children.
- An awareness of how writing helps bereaved children ‘tell their story’.
- An introduction to grief education in secondary schools using music and drama.

Is the Children’s Grief training right for me?
Our training is open and relevant to any individual who, in their professional role, works with children and young people who have been bereaved.
What might it cost for me to attend?
We make no charge to our registered School Bereavement Contacts for our training, but we ask that other professionals make a donation to the charity when booking a place.
Who is hosting the training?
Laura Thompson. Laura is Slide Away’s Clinical Services Manager. Before taking this role she was involved with the charity offering clinical supervision and training to sessional staff and volunteers. Laura is a Cruse Bereavement Care Accredited Counsellor qualified to work with children, young people and adults. Laura holds an Advanced Diploma in Childhood Bereavement accredited by the University of Middlesex.
Denise Ross. Denise is a Chartered Psychologist who trained as an Educational Psychologist at the Institute of Education. She founded Slide Away in 2004 and continues to be involved in the governance and delivery of its service.
